Dermot Morgan - Tributes

[ PICTURE: Dermot Morgan as Father Ted ]

Dermot Morgan, comedian, mimic, satirist and actor, died of a heart attack on February 28th, 1998. I didn't know him personally, so I'm hardly qualified to write his eulogy. But many people have written in to express their shock and sadness at his death, and I've collected some of my favourites here.

Weve just heard the terrible news really sorry

Terence McDonough

Goodbye Dermot, thanks for all the laughs

Tom Cosgrave

I've just heard the sad news about Dermot Morgan and as an Irish FT fan I was truly shocked. We have lost a great comedian.

Ann Marie Howard

I'm a regular to your page and just want to share the shock news with somebody. I cannot believe it-I've just heard the news about Dermot and its oh so wrong. Thats all I can say really.

Paul Dixon

Words cannot say how I feel now, but I understand you most likely feel the same. Just thought I'd offer my, well I dont know what I could offer and I hope we can all remember him as a great man. Dermot Morgan RIP. He is probably looking down now and saying, FECK!!

Tom Pringle

I have just come back from holiday's and was shocked to hear of the very tragic death of Father Ted star Dermot Morgan. I looked on the internet for further news and found your page. Being an Undertaker, I am only to aware of how suddenly these things can happen and how devistating it can be for family and freinds. The world will be a sadder place without Dermot and like many thousands of other people tonight I would like to extend my sympathies to his partner, his children and all his family and friends. What will we do without such a funny man.

Martin Folland

I feel numb. I still can't believe what I heard earlier today. Dermot Morgan has died. I feel as though I have lost not just a friend but a very close friend. I did not know Dermot but I feel I did know Father Ted and I can relate so easily to a man who was far more human than any priest I ever knew. Father Ted and, through his part in the series, Dermot Morgan have done far more for Anglo-Irish relations than any politician in London, Belfast or Dublin could have ever done. More than all of them put together. He will be sorely missed.

Andy Davison

Devastated and so sad that such a talent has been taken from us in such a truly ecumenical manner.

Paul Tubbs

As an Irishman living in the uk I was very proud of the success of Father Ted. This is a terrible loss.

Eugene Kennedy

Please send our sympathy to Dermot's family. He was a huge talent and brought a lot of enjoyment to many people.

Why all that fuss about Dianna dying and now with the death of Dermot Morgan no-one is stirring an eyelid? I mean, for god's sake, who would you have rather met?!

Sam Glover

Dermot made me very happy as Father Ted, and I'm sorry he died so young.

Leighton Pritchard

I am devastated. Can't think of anything much to say, except -- he was too young. What a loss for his family, what a loss for us all.

Julia Milton

I've been watching Dermot Morgan on tv for over 15 years. I remember him as Father Brian Trendy on The Live Mike and he was brilliant. GAA Man who broke up the set on a regular basis and his spot on impressions.

What didn't come across on Father Ted was that Dermot Morgan was a gifted Mimic. His performances on radio in Ireland, particularly Scrap Saturday are legendary. He made celebrities of the politicians he lampooned. He made me get up on a Saturday morning to listen to it (so there you go! Miracles do happen!)

My abiding memory of Dermot Morgan will be one of somebody who made me laugh, made me laugh until tears rolled down my face. One such time was on a bus from Dublin to Wexford one saturday morning. My sister and I were sitting across the aisle from each other with one earphone each to listen to Scrap. We were laughing so loudly, people were staring. We told them why and the bus driver actually put the radio on for everyone to hear.

It has been said that when a friend dies, it diminishes us all. It already has been quoted in several eulogies in the papers here in Ireland, but it bears repeating. I think Dermot's death has diminished us all a bit. We've lost somebody who made us laugh. Some of us have been laughing longer than others. Some of us have been a bit luckier to have seen earlier performances.

My condolences to Dermot's family and friends and to his fans. He will be missed.

Caroline O'Connell

God bless you, Dermot.

Tim Light

Dermot you were a great fella and you will be missed in the hearts of many many people who regularly watched your programme. Everyone will deeply miss you. So now Dermot I just hope that you rest in peace.
